Architectural concept of the Polish embassy in Berlin
The subject of the competition was to develop an architectural concept for the Polish Embassy in Berlin. The embassy is a symbol and a showcase of the Polish state beyond its borders. The intention is to give the embassy a new image, adequate to the diplomatic corps of Poland, which is to represent the interests of the state in Germany. It is proposed to preserve the existing building, thus avoiding the cost of demolition and reconstruction. The simple, rhythmic structure of the existing building allows for adaptation to a new mode of use.
The external facade is envisaged as a large screen for film projections. The transparent cladding allows light to pass through during the day (natural light) and at night (artificial light). By crossing the facade canvas, we reach the garden, an oasis of peace and tranquility, from which we enter the Embassy and Consulate buildings via a ramp. The facades and the courtyard surface will be made of brick characteristic of southern Poland. The courtyard creates a green island in the center of the big city. By opening up the ground floor of the existing building, the garden and forest inside the block become visible from Unter den Linden Street as well.
