The competition project, authored by the consortium Grupa 5, Ala Architects from Helsinki and Jarosław Kozakiewicz, which won the 1st special award in the competition for the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.
The authors' intention was to create architecture capable of challenging the iconic status of the Palace of Culture while simultaneously establishing a new point of reference in the urban space.
The building's facade facing the Defilad Square makes the square itself the most significant urban element, akin to how the Pompidou Center transformed the Georges Pompidou Plaza into a vibrant public space.
A glass wall, enabled by advanced "smart glass" technology capable of transforming into a multimedia projection screen at any moment, creates a communication space suited for the 21st century.
On the other hand, the organic, "soft," sculptural, and smooth form of the facade facing the park greenery responds to the context and symbolizes freedom of expression that transcends the confines of established styles and "isms."
This wall, covered in shiny steel cladding, could become an icon of the new museum.
Facing Marszałkowska Street, a ground-level podium was designed to accommodate commercial spaces, thereby establishing a commercial character for this side of the street.
