IDEA
The architecture of this building is cinematic. We aimed to create a narrative that unfolds from afar as a series of scenes, as a series of carefully edited viewpoints that sometimes sharply contrast and sometimes smoothly blend into the next spatial experience on the way to the event itself. We also wanted to carefully craft a coherent narrative of the building. For example, the inherent contrast between the dark, solid corridors and the open, bright foyer is obvious and easy to grasp. Also, the form and color scheme of the foyer subconsciously guide the attention of visitors.
SUMMARY OF DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS
From an Ideological standpoint, the building creates an architectural montage, a narrative, of escalating emotions, as one approaches the event taking place in the building or on the square in front of it. Additionally, it enriches Toruń with an additional viewing point, allowing for a deeper understanding of the place's identity. Spatially, the goal of this project is to create a form as simple as possible and highly functional solution for a complex program. The ECFC building fits naturally into its urban context and complements the composition of cultural buildings throughout the quarter. By orienting the main entrances east-west, it connects rather than divides public spaces.
This true collage of spaces in the vicinity and within the building will help strengthen the cultural ecosystem of this place, created in part by the Camerimage festival in Toruń throughout the year. Apart from festival weeks, the building will significantly enrich the needs of Toruń residents and the entire region. As a high-quality cultural building, it will also act as a catalyst for nurturing creativity and recognizing cinematographic art worldwide.
