A concept design for the memorial section of the Gdańsk Shipyard area (which the Gdańsk authorities have named the 'Road to Freedom'). It was prepared for the project seminar which was organised for the 25th anniversary of the August Agreements.
The project includes the expansion and rearrangement of the existing Solidarity Square which would feature a European Solidarity Center and offices for municipal authorities. The square then communicates via a green boulevard with the August Agreements Square (which was designed to be near the historic BHP hall) and then with the Square by the Pier on the bank of the old run of the Vistula where a conference and exhibition hall for international human rights advocacy gatherings was envisaged.
The rows of apple trees along the boulevard were to symbolise the harmony of life which freedom should bring. The contrast between these spaces and the harbour cranes which are purposefully kept in place ties in with the industrial tradition of the place.
The “Road to Freedom” set among greenery ends in an open manner with a broad view towards the water.
